Ujjy

Rapper/producer/songwriter/engineer UJJY has been refining his craft since 2009. In 2018 he released his first project called THANK GOD 4 DEATH, where listeners are transported into his comatose consciousness and awakened to a funky, fantastical, dark-neon-R&B world rife with influence from copious genres through which UJJY - our host and tour guide through pensive introspection - lays bare his personal self-reflections bound with existential crisis. With songs like "New Necklace" showing a dark take on a soul sample flip, and "MDNGHT PRTNDRS" reformatting an 80s Japanese funk song into a slowed down tune or "I Ran" which combines Patrice Rushen with A Flock of Seagulls, UJJY is always exploring new ways to communicate his ideas. Joined by him are the voices of his parents and friends inter-woven throughout the album, urging him to "wake up". UJJY was born Ujjval Suri in New Delhi, India and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1999. His musical journey began at a young age surrounded by older sisters and parents whom all had an interest in singing. "I knew I'd have to learn to produce if I wanted to get closer to the sounds I had in my head. I wanted to follow in Dilla's footsteps and realized that control over my artistic process was how I would find a sound unique to me. So it was natural I began to make beats, write/record and mix myself. " UJJY's musical influences include Lupe Fiasco, A Tribe Called Quest, Slum Village, jpegmafia and Jai Paul.
